Saturday 02/18/2017
7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

CHRIS JONES & THE NIGHT DRIVERS are a superb traditional bluegrass band with all the nuances associated with this genre resulting in a magnificent sound that is both “old style” yet “new” all at the same time. Their vocal harmonies are “spot on” and they are masters of all things made of wood and strings. They’ve got a great sense of humor too so stand by for that 😉 Chris not only leads this band but also hosts his own Sirius radio show – a truly great combination IMHO.

FEBRUARY 18, 2017 (Saturday), CHRIS JONES & THE NIGHT DRIVERS, show time at 7:30 pm (doors open to the public at 6:30 pm), info/resv: 703-435-8377, admission: $15 (fifteen) – children 12 and younger admitted free, barrier and smoke free facility, light snack service.

The Gibson Brothers
AMP by Strathmore, North Bethesda MD

The Gibson Brothers were recognized with the 2013 International Bluegrass Music Association Entertainers of the Year and Vocal Group of the Year awards, as well as Song of the Year (for “They Called It Music”) and Songwriter of the Year (Eric Gibson). The band has earned praise for their “exquisitely crafted, evocatively original songs” (PopMatters) and the “the thrilling tang of their throwback brotherly harmonies” (Nashville Scene).
With 2015’s Brotherhood, the band honors the special bond between founders Eric and Leigh Gibson with an all-covers album of songs recorded by music’s greatest brother duos. The concept of families singing together is a tradition that stretches back through the history of folk music, and with 20 years of musicianship behind them, the Gibson Brothers, using those groups as a compass, establish themselves as proud keepers of that musical heritage.

7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Hill Center is happy to welcome FY5 to our American Roots Concert Series!

Colorado’s FY5 proudly swim in the deep currents of American music–classic bluegrass, tried-and-true honky tonk, country swing and skillfully spun folk tales. While their sound evokes timelessness, it is decidedly contemporary, well-traveled 21st century sensibility that informs their songwriting. Their tunes draw on the bumps, bruises and laugh lines earned when we find ourselves in the “bogs” of back roads, dive bars and long, lonesome nights.

The band’s recently released 2015 album titled Eat The Moon proves that they consistently bring us “a self-assured vision of American music, rooted in tradition, but pointing to new creative directions that make it vital and relevant in today’s modern world…” as pointed out by Hearth Music.

Bumper Jacksons with Front Country
AMP by Strathmore, North Bethesda MD

It’s not often one band’s set allows you to dance the jitterbug and do-si-do. The Bumper Jacksons are wildly eclectic. One minute it’s jubilant horns and swinging rhythms, the next it’s twangy country or a sultry jazz ballad. Unafraid to scrap together new sounds from forgotten 78s, the Bumper Jacksons boldly and elegantly pay homage to traditional sounds while fashioning their own unique, DIY style.  Their shows are unpredictable, fresh, and lighthearted, with just about every instrument under sun (banjo, pedal steel, washboard, clarinet, kazoo, et al.) making an appearance.

Praised by NPR for their “instrumental virtuosity” and “expansive musical ideas,” Front Country trace their roots to bluegrass shows in San Francisco’s Mission District. From there, Front Country morphed into a melodic powerhouse, transcending their stringband origins to become a sweeping blend of texture and sound. Anchored by lead singer-songwriter Melody Walker’s “rafter-shaking” vocals, Front Country create songs that take flight with grace and gravitas, pushing the boundaries of bluegrass into something truly dynamic and original. Their latest album Other Love Songs will be released this April.

8:00 pm - 10:30 pm
The Kruger Brothers
WMC Alumni Hall/McDaniel College, Westminster MD

In an ever-expanding body of work, Jens Kruger (banjo, vocals), Uwe Kruger (guitar, lead vocals), and Joel Landsberg (bass, vocals) personify the spirit of exploration and innovation that forms the core of the American musical tradition. The result is a catalog of songs and music distinguished by its rich detail and an insight into the delicacy and complexity of everyday life. The honesty of their writing has become a hallmark of the trio’s work. Another is the banjo playing and composition of Jens Kruger. Happy Traum has described Kruger as “one of the world’s most musically sophisticated and technically accomplished five-string banjo players.” Steve Martin has described Jens Kruger as “one of the great technicians” of bluegrass as well as “a very expressive player.” Kruger plays in a melodic style that, while it may stem from the three-finger bluegrass style popularized by Snuffy Jenkins and Earl Scruggs, is also differentiated by long melodic passages and a more complex compositional foundation, often building on jazz or classical themes and techniques.

In recognition of his style and skill, Jens Kruger is an inductee to the Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame (2011) and is the fourth recipient of the coveted Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass (2013). He has also been nominated for International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Banjo Player of the Year (2016). Most recently their music has ventured further into the themes and forms of classical music, most obviously in their 2011 release, Appalachian Concerto and the 2015 release Lucid Dreamer. Through their numerous CD releases, radio and television performances, workshops, and collaborative efforts, the Kruger Brothers continue to provide a unique voice in the world of folk, Americana and classical music.

Tickets: $22-25. Senior & student discounts. http://www.commongroundonthehill.org/concertticketsList.html

Leadership Bluegrass 2017 will take place March 20-22 in Nashville, TN!

Application Deadline is November 15 – To Apply: https://ibma.org/basic-page/leadership-bluegrass-application

About Leadership Bluegrass

The purpose of the Leadership Bluegrass program is to pull together a cross section of people with exhibited or potential leadership qualities into a network of learning and communication. The results will foster a broad-based understanding of the total needs of the bluegrass community, which will help participants better prepare to determine the goals of the particular organization, company or group in which they choose to serve. Leadership Bluegrass seeks to explore bluegrass music and its place in the larger world of entertainment through:

– A systematic study of the business of bluegrass, its institutions and organizations, their needs, problems and resources
– Exposure to a wide variety of current music leaders and notable persons
– Encouraging independent thinking, fresh perspectives and approaches. It is not intended to “indoctrinate” or pass on the current leaders’ views and ideas.
– Acquaintance with relevant issues facing bluegrass, their history and future possibilities
– Involvement of all related facets of the music industry which impact bluegrass
– High quality interactive sessions for the participants.

The High Ridge Ramblers
Brown Memorial Woodbrook Presbyterian Church, Baltimore MD

The High Ridge Ramblers are Dave Bing, Andrew Dunlap, and Mark Payne. With fiddle, banjo, and guitar, the trio plays West Virginia mountain music the way they feel it. These experienced West Virginia musicians formed the trio not long ago for fun and to enjoy their appreciation of the sound of the three instruments playing this kind of music. That includes twisty mountain tunes, early bluegrass, ballads, and old-time songs. And it has been said that they know their way around a hard-driving fiddle tune.
