Americana Music Series: Bluegrass, Brew & BBQ featuring No Spare Time
Furnace Town Living Heritage Village, Snow Hill Maryland

For the 2017 season, Furnace Town Living Heritage Village presents a four part family friendly Americana Music Series featuring live musical performances of bluegrass, blues, Celtic, and country music, as well as a showcase of local craft breweries, and delicious BBQ served by local restaurants.

Americana, or old-time music, and bluegrass have deep roots in the mid-Atlantic. The Irish, Scots and British who migrated to America, and enslaved Africans brought with them the basic styles of music that are generally considered to be the roots of bluegrass music as it’s known today.

“The Americana Music Series is a great addition to Furnace Town”, says executive director Patrick Rofe. “Live bluegrass performances are one of the most requested additions to our calendar. It was an easy decision to make. Bluegrass, Brew & BBQ allows us to celebrate the rich musical traditions of our shared cultural past. We plan to expand on musical traditions next year by having them included in the Furnace Town Folk School with classes in songwriting, lutherie, singing, dance, and more. Sitting among historic nineteenth-century buildings while listening to traditional melodies it’s easy to feel like you’ve stepped back in time.”

There are four concerts in the series, June 4, July 2, August 6, and August 27 — all Sundays. Doors open at 4pm and the performance is from 5pm to 7pm. Tickets are $15 for adults and $7.50 for children under 16 and can be purchased at www.eventbrite.com or by calling Furnace Town at (410) 632-2032.

The second performance on July 2nd brings to the stage No Spare Time with its hard driving style of third generation bluegrass featuring musicians Gary Bates, Mickey Justice, Larry Lynch, Wes Parks, and Gary Weber. The featured local brewery will be Big Oyster.

In August you can join Keagan Justice, Mickey Justice, Dave Kohut, and Mike O’Laughlin – The Fellow Travelers on a journey as they explore the musical bridge between the British Isles and Appalachia. The final performance of the Americana Music Series will feature musicians Dan Caton, Keagan Justice, Mickey Justice, Jon Simmons, and Todd Smith. Third Wave Brewery and Fin City Brewing Co. have signed on as our local craft brewers for the performances in August.

For more information visit the Furnace Town website at www.furnacetown.org or the Furnace Town Facebook page @furnacetownvillage. Purchase tickets at www.eventbrite.com or at Furnace Town at (410) 632-2032.

Support provided by Mickey Justice, Billy Earl, PAC-14 and Shore Craft Beer. Sponsorships are still available and benefits include sponsor logos on posters, signs, websites, and more. For more information about the American Music Series, please call 410-632-2032.

Thursday 07/06/2017
7:30 am - 8:30 pm

Wayne Henderson is a National Heritage Award recipient honored for his craftsmanship as a luthier and his renowned finger-style Appalachian guitar playing. Wayne has toured broadly in the U.S., Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. His lightening fast, articulate playing style was influenced by Doc Watson and EC Ball, both close friends and neighbors in this musically rich corner where Southwest Virginia meets Northwest North Carolina. His repertoire includes Appalachian fiddle tunes, Carter Family melodies and a few swing and rockabilly standards. He has won more awards at the Galax Fiddlers Convention than any other competitor in its seventy-seven year history.

A singer, fiddler, guitarist and tunesmith, Helen White has toured extensively with Wayne in the U.S. and Europe. Her compositions include works for theater and video projects as well as a Booklist honored recording of original songs for children. Helen is the founder and served as director of the Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM) program at the local and regional level for 15 years, beginning with program inception in February of 2000. This renowned program now serves students in 40 mountain counties in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee introducing them to their musical heritage through small group instruction in the instruments and music common to the region.

Both Wayne and Helen are frequent instructors at major traditional music camps across the country.

Music fans in many pockets of North America already know why I Draw Slow is a favorite in the band’s home country of Ireland. But with their spring tour and new album, Turn Your Face to the Sun, releasing April 21, 2017, on Compass Records, the band is poised to sweep many more stateside listeners into their fold. Sibling vocalists Dave and Louise Holden share a love of American folk and Irish storytelling, which they combine with close-harmony vocals, intriguing instrumentation and compelling subject matter to craft a captivating folk-Americana sound that easily penetrates hearts and minds. With Dave on acoustic guitar, Adrian Hart on violin, Colin Derham on clawhammer banjo and Konrad Liddy on double bass, I Draw Slow is ready to permanently enter yours.

Americana Music Series: Bluegrass, Brew & BBQ

In August you can join Keagan Justice, Mickey Justice, Dave Kohut, and Mike O’Laughlin – The Fellow Travelers on a journey as they explore the musical bridge between the British Isles and Appalachia for the third concert in the series.

Americana Music Series: Bluegrass, Brew & BBQ
