The High & Wides open for Boister’s 20th anniversary concert.

The High and Wides play music inspired by, but not tethered to, the days when string bands blurred the lines between bluegrass, old-time, country, boogie, blues, rockabilly and western swing. The band features 3 former members of long-time regional favorites Chester River Runoff. They perform material ranging from old-time brother duets to originals that draw from their decade in bluegrass while inventively defying the conventions of the genre.

Note – Boister are not a bluegrass band.

Through film scores and song form, Anne Watts and Boister explore themes of birth, death, transcendence, love, play, and war.
The band hails from Baltimore, a city that has spawned a host of musical characters: from Cab Calloway and Billie Holiday to Frank Zappa, Philip Glass and David Byrne. Boister has won accolades for playing music that, as producer Jim Dickinson put it, “makes Tom Waits sound like a sissy.” Baltimore’s City Paper described the group as “devastating [and] refreshingly radical,” and awarded Watts Best Pop Composer in 2014.

That includes twisty mountain tunes, early bluegrass, ballads, and old-time songs. And it has been said that they know their way around a hard-driving fiddle tune.
