Open Bluegrass jam. All levels (multiple circles). The Farm Brewery at Broad Run is on a spacious, well laid out, farm with food and beverages available. The jam is held on the SECOND and FOURTH Thursdays. There is ample parking and a friendly staff. The Farm Brewery closes at 9:00 PM, hence, jam hours are 6:30 to 8:30 PM.

One of the best tenor singers in all of bluegrass, Larry Stephenson leads a band with some of the finest bluegrass sidemen around. They enthrall audiences with traditional bluegrass, gospel standards and heart-breaking musical stories. With awards too numerous to mention and experience on the Grand Ole Oprey and prominent bluegrass festivals, the Larry Stephenson Band graces the Lucketts stage on November 16. I’ve been working to get another jam set up for folks who live a little further west of DC and I’m proud to announce our first jam will take place on Tuesday May 21st from 8PM – 10PM at PJ SKidoos in Fairfax. Currently this jam will be held EVERY THIRD TUESDAY to offset the Port City Brewery jam and the other jams around the area.

With an inventive take on bluegrass, progressive bluegrass band The Seldom Scene has displayed both their original material and their interpretations of songs from limitless genres. The Seldom Scene is dobro player Fred Travers, bassist Ronnie Simpkins, guitarist Dudley Connell, mandolinist Lou Reid and banjo player Ron Stewart.

Presented by Common Ground Downtown, a partnership of Common Ground on the Hill and the Carroll County Arts Council.

The goal of this class is to help students expand their repertoire while honing the skills required to play with others and be creative while doing it. Each session students will learn 1 or 2 songs or fiddle tunes from the bluegrass repertoire. The class will go over basic lead playing and accompaniment to get started, and offer some ideas to take it a little further with embellishments, improvisation, kickoffs and endings. All levels and all instruments are welcome.

The jams are lead by SMT teachers and members of the band Cherry Blossom Special Nick Cameron, Mari Carlson, and Justin Heath. Bring your instrument and a song and don’t be afraid to take a solo. This is a free event but donations are welcome!
