Hailing from Ashe County, North Carolina, Tray Wellington first garnered acclaim as the banjo player with Cane Mill Road, earning a 2019 IBMA Momentum Instrumentalist of the Year Award. After graduating from the esteemed Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Country program at East Tennessee State University, he went on to form the Tray Wellington Band. The Wall Street Journal praised his 2022 release, Black Banjo, for breaking through subgenre boundaries. Notable for banjo workshops at Merlefest and Gray Fox festivals and appearances on the BBC and CNN’s United Shades of America, Wellington’s musical journey showcases his commitment to pushing boundaries in bluegrass.
